DIY - Color Block

All you need is Paint & Beer.

I am in love with my new office space. If you need to give your space a little love just try a color block!

Let me show you a before picture first…

Cute right? But not my style.

Also, my desk was maybe for a 12 year old which is fine but I can’t even fit my actual monitor on this desk.

So I thrifted a cute MCM desk and wanted to come up with a different office space look…

My brain automatically thought new white wall paint & a color block.

Okay, let me show you how easy this is!

Materials Needed:

Step 1: Crack open that Beer!

Today I have an awesome Hazy IPA from Memphis Tennessee.

Its called Bow Echo Hazy IPA from WISEACRE Brewing Company and I am obsessed. It has perfect notes of citrus and fruit which was perfect for the 75 degree weather we had in Denver.

I highly recommend and can’t wait to try more beers from WISEACRE Brewing Company.

Step 2: Visualize your color block wall. Figure out what shape or style you want your color block to be.

I sketched out over 8 different options. I would have done an arch but I already did one in the hallway so I figured I would change it up.

I went with the “Rectangle Radler” (if you follow me on Instagram then you can see what other weird ideas I had including the names).

Drawing your ideas first gives you a better sense of size/ colors/ and what decorations you’ll want or need.

Figure out what idea you love best. Try it out. If you hate it… just repaint it. You never know until you try.

Step 3: Let’s Draw it out!
Okay for this step we need the tape measure, a level, & a pencil.

First use your tape measure and find the end points where you want your color block to start and end. Honestly, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just makes sure the width of your rectangle matches the start and end. Once you find the end points and width mark them with the pencil.

Next take your level and make some straight lines. Make sure it is straight using the bubble guidelines (make sure bubble is in middle) then use your pencil and draw your straight lines until you meet each end of the rectangle.

Step 4: Tape it!

Use the painters tape and slowly align the tape against your pencil marks. I recommend using a thicker frog tape to help prevent painting out of the lines.

Press down on your tape to make sure its sticking to your wall. You don’t want the paint to seep through.

Step 5: Paint it!

If your wall was previously a different darker color I would recommend priming it. If your walls are white like mine you can skip this step.

Now pick out your color!

I love dark green! I came across this awesome color from Benjamin Moore called Backwoods. I picked up a sample pint from my local Ace Hardware store and that was all I needed for this project ($10.00).

First paint the outline of the color block using an angle paint brush. Try your best not to rush or paint over the tape.

Then use a roller to finish the middle. I used a smaller paint roller since the area of my color block was very tiny.

I ended up doing 3 coats, it depends on the color and texture on your wall.

Step 6: Beer Break & let it dry!

Step 7: Remove the Tape

Removing the tape is my favorite part. Not much to explain here but remove the tape… Hold a beer while you do it :)
