DIY Boho Wooden Dowel Art - Under $10.00

What you need:

  • Beer(s) of your choice

  • Glue Gun | Glue sticks (If you don’t have one already check out this one) Make sure you get the right size glue sticks to go with it.

  • Canvas (I used 12 x 16) Here is a 6 pk but you can get individual ones at your local Walmart or Art stores.

  • Wooden Dowels (2-3 packs) You can use the assortment or the same size dowels

  • Paint - Sage Green (found this at a thrift store) Tip: You can get sample paint from Home Depot or Lowes of the color you want.

  • Paint Brush

  • Jute Twine (optional)

  • Scissors

Okay, now lets get started

Step 1: Grab your Beer

Let's grab our beer… What beer are you drinking? Anything interesting? Add it to the comments section.

For this project I have a super yummy beer from Mountains Walking Brewery, called Dessert Cart. If that name doesn't capture your attention I don’t know what will.  It’s a Pastry Stout with Chocolate and Peanut Butter. Okay, legit drooling.

Step 2:  Prep work;

Grab your canvas and wooden dowels and let's figure out how we want our art to look so we know how many dowels we will be using to paint.

Be creative! I was going for a minimalist look! I may change it up at the end.

Step 3: Paint Time

Now we know how many wooden dowels we will be using. If you want to get creative with paint be my guest. I just wanted one color. You can paint the canvas a darker color with lighter dowels/ ombre paint (that would be so cool)/etc. Give it your own design to fit your space.

I used this Sage Green, I found it thrifting at the Habitat For Humanity Restore. It was only $15.00 for a gallon and I will be using this color in a lot of upcoming projects.

You can paint your dowels first - try to find a place to put them ( not on cardboard like I did) you don't want the cardboard to get stuck to the dowel because of the wet paint. Make sure you paint the ends of the dowels.

If you already know the placement of your dowels you can also just glue them to the canvas and then paint it all together.

Paint your Canvas: Make sure you get all sides, be careful not to place it on something to prop it up or else your canvas will get indents. I did two coats of paint on the canvas.

Step 4: Let’s enjoy a beer break & let shit dry. Depending on the paint you used you may want to wait until the next day to start constructing your masterpiece.

Step 5: Dowel Placement

Now let's figure out our design. I am going to change it up from the first placement I had. I will show you what I am going to do instead. On your dry canvas figure out where you want the dowels to go, make sure you have enough dowels to make your design.

Step 6: Glue time

After you figure out your dowel placement. Grab your glue gun and glue stick. Make sure you read the safety precautions and directions before use. I am super clumsy and legit always burn myself with these things.

Starting from the bottom,I am going to glue the canvas where the dowels will go. Then press the dowel down on the canvas. Don’t press too hard, you don’t want to puncture the canvas. I will continue until I finish gluing all wooden dowels.

I ended up adding two more non-painted wood dowels - be creative!

Step 7: Admire what you did and take a beer break.

Step 8: If you see any spots that need a touch up with paint or if you had a glue gun mistake - Just paint it and let it dry!

Step 9: This is where I am going to get extra. I am going to take my jute twine and get creative.

I weaved the jute twine in-between the dowels. You can either glue the sections or I am just wrapping it around and going to tie the two ends of the twine in the back of the canvas.

Please get creative with the twine! I ended up going with another layer and crossing over the twine to create an X over the canvas. Get creative and make it unique. It doesn’t have to be perfect!
